Are We Getting Enough

Are Supplements Really Essential

This is a very big and very good question. Choice is on the increase however advise is not so much. This is where we come in and I hope you find this helpful.

What are supplements

Nutrition supplements are there to help enhance our performance and sometime help bridge the gap from what we are getting, to what our bodies require based on our fitness goals. Like for example, our bodies cannot produce BCAAsBranched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) so we get this from foods such as beef, chicken, fish, eggs and various other foods. However, BCCA Supplement can help with muscle fatigue, muscle growth and alleviate muscle soreness. So like I stated they can be there to enhance your goals.

Are supplements really essential?

Now although the big supplement companies would have you think that you do, for most they are not actually essential for living a healthy lifestyle. All of our essential vitamins and minerals can come from and healthy balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and fresh meats.

So why should you use them

Well, although supplements are not overly essential to live a healthy lifestyle, we can use supplements to help increase some of the nutrients we are getting from our diet which can include Multi-Vitamins, Calcium and Fish Oils for Omega 3.Multi-Vitamins

Depending on your goals whether you just need an extra bit of protein into your diet, you need that extra bit of nutrition, then a shake is perfect to have on the go.

So what are the Essentials

There are so many supplements on the market and so easily to get confused. I can remember when I first got into fitness, I was very naive and did not have a clue what I was doing, what I was looking for and never had any proper guidance. The truth is, depending on your fitness goals your supplement requirements will be very different. For example if your are looking to build lean muscle or bulk Whey Protein is a great supplement for post-workout. BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids) are great during workout for building muscle. Creatine Monohydrate is great for improve strength and building lean muscle mass.

If you are looking to lose weight you may want to just stick to a Multi-Vitamin, Whey Protein and concentrate on keeping a healthy diet and make sure your macros are correct.Whey Protein

Final Thoughts

So should supplements be part of your diet. Personally I would say yes. However, be very careful when choosing what supplementation you chose and think about the purpose it is for. We all have different goals and all have different body types as well so whilst a certain supplement works for one, it doesn’t mean it will always work for another.

I would also point our that you should never chose supplements like diet protein, slim fast shakes over a healthy diet. Supplements are exactly what it means which is ‘a thing added to something else in order to complete or enhance it’.

I will be going over the reviewing various supplements and will be sharing what they are for and when is best to use them, I am a big believer in the living a healthy lifestyle.

However, I am also one to look for a little help when it’s needed providing it is natural.

I do hope you found this helpful.

  1. Good to know, I use to buy from time to time some nutrition supplements just to be sure I’m fine.
Without any researching, I was thinking it will not hurt to have some extra.
After reading your post, I will reconsider and use only if needed
Thanks for opening my eyes, no need from now on to buy Omega 3 pills as I’m eating fish few times
    per week, right?

    1. Thanks for your comment. Yeah providing you are getting your fatty acids and omega 3 from oily fish such as Mackerel, Salmon, Tuna, Herring and Sardines then great stuff.

  2. Thanks for your article. I am very confused when it comes to vitamins. I never really know what companies to trust and what vitamins I actually need. Sometimes my diet is good and other days its terrible. I finally decided to just purchase a multi vitamin for women over 50. I don’t take it everyday, usually because I don’t remember! Sometimes I take one if my diet for the day is not as good as it should be.
    I appreciate your article, thanks!

    1. Thank you for your comments, Multi-Vitamin would always be my first choice as this can help get some essential vitamins we may not be getting from our diet. Good way to remember to take them every day is to keep them in a kitchen cupboard, on your kitchen counter (that’s where I keep mine so I never forget) or somewhere you know you will see them. Keep it up.

  3. Hi
There is a lot of information concerning vitamins and minerals, and it is a mind field trying to sort out what is essential and what is required. My question is that lots of experts say multivitamins are a waste of time, you are producing expensive urine. It is better to have a variable diet. What is your opinion on this?

    1. Hi Antonio, thanks for the comment. It really depends on what sort of brand you go for to be honest. I would agree that if your going into a supermarket and buying a cheap own branded Multi-Vitamin it would likely be a waste of money and a waste of time. I would always recommend getting Multi-Vitamins from a health food shop as they are more likely to have the best. I will be issuing reviews on the good, bad and the ugly on the Multi-Vitamins.

      Hope this helps.

  4. Hi, Tim~! Thanks for your article about the supplement! I’d like to buy some recently as well. What should we becare or if there are some tips to choose a suitable supplement?? I’m afraid that if there is some side effect or not.

    1. Hiya, it really depends on what your goals are, whether it lose weight, build muscle or just get a little healthier it really depends. I would always go for as natural as you can and try and stay away from supermarket own brands. I would also suggest going into a health food shop. Also remember that supplements are for bridging the gap and supplement an already healthy lifestyle. If you are really unsure I would also suggest speaking to your doctor for a bit more guidance on what is right for you.

      I hope this helps.
